The Thirteen Fingers
The Cardian Spit is a land-bound peninsula under the territorial control of Pelinore that divides the Karasuriku and Dayreoudan provinces of the Tesaki Juusan. It is mostly low-valley grassland bordered by strings of hills and cliffs. Running along the Spit’s southern border towards the northeast is the Taitan Wall.
Currently populated by mostly farmers, shepherds, and miners, the Cardian Spit was the most active territory during the Steel War. From 1254-1260, the Spit averaged a battle or skirmish every ten days. The most famous day of the Steel War occurred on October 16th, 1256, when three separate and distinct battles were fought in various parts of the Spit, conducted at various times under the direction of different captains, generals, and armed forces who were (generally believed to be) unaware that a separate incursion was occurring elsewhere in the territory. It was the deadliest day of the war, claiming approximately 1,300 lives total from both sides.
The day is immortalized in the Juusan today as All-Souls Day, or Cardian’s Wake, and is celebrated by the consumption of three large meals, interspersed prayer gatherings, church meetings, and community reflection on the Steel War in general. A late-night parade, known as the Walk of Souls, is a silent vigil where those who lost ancestors or family in the War dress in mourner’s clothing and march through the streets, followed by the third meal of the day, which is typically punctuated by the consumption of vast quantities of alcohol, particularly among the mourners.
